Waffle day, or “Våffeldagen” in Swedish, is a tradition and food holiday celebrated in Sweden. Waffles was introduced in Sweden in the 17th century, but popularized in its current sweet form, served with jam and cream, in the 19th century.
Waffle Day and the Christian religious holiday Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on the same day each year, March 25. The shift from religious celebration to eating waffles happened because the Swedish name for “Feast of the Annunciation”, Vårfrudagen, sounds similar to Våffeldagen in faster speech.
In recent years, Waffle day has spread to other countries around the world, and is now celebrated as “International Waffle Day”. Waffles are typically made with cow’s milk and butter, but they actually tastes better and are healthier in a plant based version.
