Waffle day, “Våffeldagen” in Swedish, is a ritual and food holiday celebrated in Sweden. Waffles were introduced in Sweden in the 17th century, but popularized in their current sweet form, served with jam and cream, in the 19th century.
Waffle Day and the Christian religious holiday Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on the same day each year, March 25. The shift from religious celebration to eating waffles happened because the Swedish name for “Feast of the Annunciation”, Vårfrudagen, sounds similar to Våffeldagen in faster speech. Now celebrated as “International Waffle Day”, waffle day has spread to other countries all over the world in recent years.
Typically made with cow’s milk and butter, waffles actually taste better and are healthier in a plant-based version. We’ve found 20 creative recipes for vegan waffle extravaganza – Watch, and start heating your waffle iron!
